How does valve work?

A globe valve operates through a linear motion mechanism to control fluid flow in pipelines, featuring a disc (closing element) that moves vertically against a stationary seat within the valve body.

When opening the valve, the actuator—whether a manual handwheel, electric motor, or pneumatic cylinder—rotates to lift the stem and attached disc away from the seat. This creates a gap between the disc and seat, allowing media such as liquids, gases, or steam to flow through the valve body. The flow rate can be precisely adjusted by varying the height of the disc: a small gap restricts flow for throttling purposes, while a full lift enables maximum flow capacity.

To close the valve, the actuator drives the stem and disc downward, pressing the disc tightly against the seat. The precision-machined sealing surfaces of the disc and seat form a tight seal, preventing media leakage and isolating the pipeline section.

Unlike gate valves, globe valves inherently create some flow resistance due to their Z-shaped or S-shaped internal flow path, but this design enhances their ability to regulate flow with high accuracy—making them ideal for applications requiring precise throttling and process control.
