How does valve work?

The plug valve operates on a straightforward rotational mechanism centered around a cylindrical or conical plug—a key component with a precision-machined through-hole (bore) matching the valve's flow path. When the valve is in the "closed" position, the plug's bore is perpendicular to the pipeline, and its solid body blocks the fluid passage to prevent flow. To open the valve, the plug is rotated 90 degrees (via manual handle, electric actuator, or pneumatic drive), aligning its bore with the pipeline's inner diameter to allow unobstructed fluid flow. Sealing performance is ensured by the tight fit between the plug and the valve body's internal seat—often enhanced by PTFE, graphite, or metal sealing rings. As the plug rotates, the sealing surface maintains consistent contact with the seat, preventing leakage even under high pressure or corrosive conditions. For throttling applications, partial rotation of the plug (less than 90 degrees) adjusts the overlap between the plug's bore and the pipeline, regulating flow rate proportionally. This simple yet robust design enables fast on/off operation, low flow resistance, and reliable sealing, making plug valves ideal for various industrial fluid control scenarios.
