How does valve work?

A gate valve operates through a linear motion mechanism to control fluid flow in pipelines. At its core is a rectangular or wedge-shaped gate (the closing element) that moves vertically between two seats within the valve body.

When opening the valve, the actuator (manual handwheel, electric motor, or pneumatic cylinder) drives the stem upward, lifting the gate away from the valve seats. This creates an unobstructed full flow path for media—such as liquids, gases, or steam—to pass through with minimal resistance.

To close the valve, the actuator lowers the stem and gate, pressing the gate tightly against the seats. The precision-machined sealing surfaces of the gate and seats form a tight seal, preventing media leakage and isolating the pipeline section.

The linear movement of the gate ensures gradual regulation of flow when partially open, while full opening allows maximum flow capacity. Gate valves are designed for on-off service and moderate throttling, relying on the secure contact between the gate and seats to maintain sealing integrity under different pressure and temperature conditions.
