How does valve work?

A stainless steel butterfly valve operates on a straightforward 90° rotary mechanism to control fluid flow, with its core components including a corrosion-resistant stainless steel body, a circular disc, a central shaft, and a sealing system (soft PTFE/rubber or metal-to-metal). This design ensures reliable performance across diverse industrial and commercial applications.

When in the open position, an actuator (manual lever, pneumatic, electric, or hydraulic) rotates the shaft and attached disc to align parallel with the pipeline axis. The streamlined disc minimizes flow resistance, allowing liquids, gases, or slurries to pass through with minimal pressure drop. For throttling purposes, partial rotation of the disc adjusts the flow rate by varying the open area between the disc and valve body.

To shut off flow completely, the actuator rotates the disc 90° to a position perpendicular to the pipeline. The disc's edge presses firmly against the valve seat: soft seals deform slightly to create a bubble-tight barrier for low-pressure scenarios, while metal-to-metal seals withstand high temperatures and pressures for heavy-duty use.
