How does valve work?

The working principle of a knife gate valve relies on the vertical movement of its blade-shaped gate to control the on-off of fluid in the pipeline, featuring simple structure and reliable cut-off performance.

In the opening process (taking manual knife gate valve as an example), rotating the handwheel counterclockwise drives the valve stem and the connected gate to move upward. As the gate lifts away from the valve seat and sealing ring gradually, it continues to rise to the top of the valve's full bore. At this point, the flow path is fully unobstructed, allowing fluid to pass through the valve smoothly.

For the closing process, turning the handwheel clockwise causes the valve stem to descend, pushing the gate downward. The sharp-edged gate first contacts the fluid medium and then presses tightly against the valve seat and sealing ring under mechanical pressure from the valve stem. The angled design between the gate and the valve seat ensures effective squeezing and cutting of the fluid (especially viscous media like slurry), achieving a tight seal and completely shutting off the fluid flow in the pipeline.

For knife gate valves with other actuation methods (e.g., pneumatic, electric, electro-hydraulic), the core working principle of the gate's vertical movement remains consistent. The difference lies in the driving mechanism: pneumatic types use compressed air to push the cylinder piston, electric types rely on a motor to drive the valve stem, and electro-hydraulic types utilize hydraulic power—all to realize the lifting and lowering of the gate for opening or closing operations.
